Nouvelle interview de Robert Pattinson avec GQ Middle East

Il revient (entre autre) sur sa carrière, la célébrité, les années Twilight et la dernière campagne de Dior Homme.

L'interview : (en anglais)

What?” says Robert Pattinson from beyond the crackling and hissing of the phone line from Paris. “What?” I reply mid-his ‘what’, adding to the static-y confusion of the call. “What?” He replies again, following a brief pause and which just about turns the whole thing into an impromptu take on a scene from his 2019 movie, The Lighthouse. In it, he and Willem Dafoe barked the word at each other, with increased madness, around 54 times. That makes me Dafoe on this call and, reasonably enough, confusion reigns.

The face of Dior Homme since 2013, Pattinson’s career trajectory has an authenticity that you rarely see in other actors. Whether in the sticky heat of an all-consuming franchise like Twilight, the grit and complexity of movies such as High Life and Good Time, or the intensity of what’s next – Batman 2021 – the 33-year-old takes risks with form and genre in his stride.

There’s a boldness to his style choices, too. Big fits, sharp tailoring, the air tie – yeah, Pattinson was on to that way before last year’s red carpet caught up. In many ways, that’s why he makes perfect sense as the face of the fragrance. A guy that evokes the likes of Brando and Dean, who can never quite be pinned down, who somehow manages to reinvent the notion of classic with each passing year.

The fragrance itself? Well you can expect a rich, woody scent with bergamot hits and subtle pink peppercorn notes. It’s a straight-to-the-point scent that’s mirrored in the accompanying short film. Directed by French avant-garde duo, The Blaze, there’s a swaggering beauty to it all, with iconic NYC as the backdrop and punctuated by the swaying, hypnotic dancing of Pattinson. But more on that later. For now, phone lines have been changed, problems have been solved, and we get to work.

You don’t often stop and think about the fame...
“It was only post-Twilight that I realised I’d been working non-stop for around six years. You don’t really appreciate how intense that is. It was only when I began to slow down and take stock of things that I was like, ‘Whoa, I’m in a very different place now’. It’s kind of scary when that realisation creeps in.”

Taking your foot off the gas makes you think...
“It’s a strange feeling. At first you’re concerned with not working every day, then, after a while, you begin to worry about never working again! I had that fear for quite a while.”

Deux nouvelles interviews de Robert Pattinson avec Vogue lors de la Paris Fashion Week

Avec Vogue.com :

Friday night, Dior Homme hosted a super star-studded event at Paris fashion week-favorite, Caviar Kaspia. The dinner helped celebrate the latest runway show, but also the launch of the new Dior Homme Eau de Toilette fragrance. Hosts of the evening were Dior men’s artistic director Kim Jones and the face of Dior Men, Robert Pattinson.

"I'm very excited about tonight, it was an amazing show, I love Kim and he always does a great party!" said Pattinson upon arrival, dressed in a Dior leather jacket paired with the new Air Jordan I High OG Dior sneakers from the men's fall 2020 show and a black cap.

After a quick stop for the photographers in the entrance of the restaurant, attendees gathered upstairs one by one and toasted to the just-unveiled collection, which paid homage to Jones's late friend, the fashion icon Judy Blame.

"He was one of the people who really inspired me to get into jewelry so, in a way, it's a tribute to my hero, and with Kim's direction we captured it in a very elegant way," said Yoon Ahn, who designed the jewelry for the show.

For actress Christina Ricci, the show was her favorite since Jones took the helm; she described it as "very sentimental and nostalgic." Kate Moss, who was accompanied by her daughter Lila Grace, and soon joined by Courtney Love, was enthusiastic at dinner, happy to be supporting Jones.

Other guests included Cara Delevingne, Bella Hadid, Suki Waterhouse, Adwoa Aboah, Noomi Rapace, Diplo, Fai Khadra, Lukas Sabbat, Jordan Barrett, Honey Dijon, and Miss Fame, along with Dior Perfume creator François Demachy. Also there were the Beckhams and their son Brooklyn, who made a late appearance. Everyone congregated over cocktails at the bar.

It was then time to take seats at the large tables laid with black arums, pink roses and hand-calligraphed place cards by Nicolas Ouchenir, where king crab salad and Norwegian smoked salmon were served before the main course of Kaspia's legendary baked potatoes topped with Imperial Baeri caviar.

On the walls were black-and-white portraits of Pattinson and video screens that unveiled the new Dior HMen film campaign directed by French duo The Blaze, portraying Pattinson in intimate shots of strength and charm. "I knew I wanted to do something that was about body and physicality," commented Pattinson, who has been the fragrance's face since 2013. "The way The Blaze shoot really conveys the motional context through physicality, whether it's dancing or whether it's just how they shoot the body. And so, I wanted to do something about skin, which I've never really done before," he added.

The new Dior Men, composed by Demachy, is a reinvention of its very first version created in 2005, with a new intensely woody scent, capturing the essence of both masculinity and sensuality. As for how to wear it, according to Pattinson: "you spray a little cloud in front of you and you just wiggle around in it. That's actually how I do it. There's nothing more exciting!" he said laughing.

Around midnight, Kaspia's staff swiftly removed all the tables and chairs as the dinner turned into a wild dance party with vibrant DJ sets by iconic Neneh Cherry and Robyn. Everyone stood up and danced as new guests arrived and lit up the dance floor until late at night.

Robert Pattinson parle de la nouvelle campagne Dior Homme avec Esquire Middle East

image host

L'interview : (En anglais)

A funny, quirky, strong, self-assure and a dance-like-nobody's-watching attitude is on display as Robert Pattinson crushes it in his performance in the newly-launched fragrance campaign for Dior Homme.

Accompanied by a soundtrack of Lenoard Cohen's "I'm Your Man", The Batman star showcases a roadmap of every man that you want to be... even making to otherwise awkward dance moves look cool.

"It was interesting to play all those roles in such a short stint," Pattinson tells Esquire Middle East. The face of Dior Homme since 2013 described the part in the film where he put a protective arm across his female companion as "really cheesy on set...but when you see the final edit it looks great"

Tasked with creating 'a portrait of the modern man' Dior perfumer Francois Demachy realised the latest fragrance by with a strong woody scent.

"The signature of this composition is an overdoes of sensual woods," says Demachy. "The new Dior Homme gets straight to the point; it claims a frank, solid simplicity. Appealing, but conceals an enveloping softness."

Nouvelle interview de Robert Pattinson avec WWD durant la Paris Fashion Week

Dans cette interview, il évoque le tournage de la nouvelle publicité de Dior Homme (notamment la partie où il a du danser) et The Batman !

L'interview :

PARIS — Robert Pattinson is no stranger to scents. Pre-beard, the actor would pretend to shave, apply shaving cream, use a razor, then cologne. But after that time, there was a long hiatus.

“To be honest, until I started working for Dior, I hadn’t worn perfume in years,” said the longstanding Dior Homme fragrance ambassador on Friday morning, sitting in a suite in Le Bristol Paris hotel.

It’s the day of the Dior men’s show, and he’s in town to front the new Dior Homme Eau de Toilette, conceived by the house’s perfumer-creator François Demachy.

“I really do like all the products from the line,” said Pattinson. “The new one, it smells delicious.”

The Blaze, comprised of cousins Guillaume Alric and Jonathan Alric, directed the film campaign for the latest fragrance.

“They’re great directors,” said Pattinson, referring also to Romain Gavras, who lensed the prior Dior Homme ad. “I wanted to work with them anyway, to do other things.”

Pattinson saw The Blaze’s treatment — elements of the screenplay — for the new campaign way before it was filmed, and it included dance.

“I don’t dance — at all. Ever,” admitted the actor, who recently was in movies such as “The Lighthouse,” “Waiting for the Barbarians” and “The King.” “The best parts of their music videos are always a kind of interesting, experimental dance sequence. I think subconsciously I really wanted to do that, but I just don’t have the capability.

“When I saw the treatment, I was terrified for months going into it, dreaded the day when it was going to happen,” Pattinson said.

Fast-forward to that day, when he ended up in an empty club in Brooklyn, N.Y., on a spotlighted dance floor. Pattinson danced there, while The Blaze guys danced in sympathy near the camera, so he didn’t feel too alone.

“We did four takes, and I was kind of getting used to it a little bit,” Pattinson said. But then he learned dancers were being called in.

“I was like: ‘What do you mean, dancers? There was no mention of other people in this,’” he said. It wasn’t two or three dancers, either. Two-hundred professionals were brought in to dance around Pattinson.

“It was one of the most unbelievably terrifying experiences I’ve ever had in my life,” he said. “I might as well have streaked down the middle of the Champs-Élysées.”

Pattinson thought his fear of dance had become a distant memory.

Nouvelle interview de Robert Pattinson avec Vanity Fair

Avec la sortie de The Lighthouse au Royaume Uni il y a quelques jours, les nouvelles interviews se multiplient !

L'interview (en anglais) :

Partway through The Lighthouse, the Robert Eggers film about two keepers jostling over control of the flame and their own wits, we get the distinct sense that Robert Pattinson is most comfortable on the fringes of comfort. Drunken howling, ferocious masturbation, wheelbarrow marches that could only be marginally less grueling on the player than the played: Pattinson, rather insanely, seems to relish it all. Willem Dafoe, as the elder wickie, sets his wild eyes ablaze, but we half-wonder if Pattinson carries his unhinged zaniness off-camera, too.

“There’s definitely a part of me that is sort of perverse,” Pattinson says in a call from London, a hint of thrill in his voice. Take, for one, the dominant smell on set. “Lots of rotting fish everywhere. Of all the sensory parts of that experience, the smell was probably the worst,” he recalls, more as qualification than complaint. “I like it when things are just kind of grimy the whole time.”

The actor’s newest role, then—playing the beau in a Dior Homme eau de toilette campaign, released today—is quite the foil. In the 45-second spot, directed by the French production duo The Blaze, Pattison plays it straight. As in, Fantasy Heterosexual Male. He wordlessly orchestrates under-table makeouts; he sweeps a protective arm on a sketchy walk home; he spoons shirtless on a white shag rug. Selling fragrance always is about selling sex (his previous campaign included). But the cologne’s press notes dare you to blush. “The new Dior Homme is crafted from a block of frank, sensual wood,” it reads. Well, then! It’s the olfactory equivalent of the carved ivory mermaid that serves as the lust object in The Lighthouse. Or maybe it’s the light itself: warm and enveloping, cloaking you even when you’re naked.

“In the last five or six years, I’ve almost exclusively played weirdos,” Pattinson says with a laugh. “It was almost a relief to be like, ‘At least I’ve got Dior coming out, so I don’t look like I’m just completely enveloped by the dark side yet.’ ” That embrace of off-kilter characters—in the hands of directors like Werner Herzog, Claire Denis, and the Safdie brothers—was a pendulum swing away from the Twilight saga. With this summer’s Tenet from Christopher Nolan and next year’s anticipated The Batman, the recent days of relative anonymity seem numbered. All the more reason to reflect on simple pleasures, coping mechanisms, and things that tickle the nose.

Vanity Fair: The mermaid in The Lighthouse makes me think Daryl Hannah’s character in Splash—when she unfurls in a bathtub filled with Morton’s salt. Are you partial to baths?

Robert Pattinson: I like the idea of getting in the bath, and then, as soon as I get in, there’s something incredibly claustrophobic [about it]. It's weird. I could never really understand how girls could just stay in the bath for hours and hours and hours. I always feel like I'm always on the cusp of a panic attack! I got a very nice bath when I was redecorating my house, and I don’t think I’ve been in it one time.

You grew a mustache for this movie. What reactions did you get with it, and was it difficult to settle into?

The two times I've done a movie where I have had quite significant facial hair—I do not understand men who choose to do this to themselves. The idea of having a mustache as your go-to look for your whole life [means] you've got to be out of your mind. It's like having a stone in your shoe every day. You’re constantly sneezing, constantly covered in food. When we were in Nova Scotia, having a mustache definitely [helped you] fit in a little bit more with fishermen; I think you'd get more abuse if you didn't have one. It definitely does encourage you to have a whole bunch of different facial expressions. I think I was just constantly trying to keep my hairs out of my nostrils.

On the morning of the fall 2020 Dior Homme show and dinner he would later host alongside the label’s menswear designer Kim Jones, Robert Pattinson is feeling a little sleepy. “I took two melatonin,” he says, from inside the walls of Le Bristol in Paris. “I just can’t wake up!”

In some ways, it’s not surprising. The actor is busy preparing for a big night, and an even bigger year. At the aforementioned party at Caviar Kaspia, Pattinson debuted a commercial for the brand's new Dior Homme Eau de Toilette fragrance (out this month) to an audience including Kate Moss, Bella Hadid, Diplo, Courtney Love, Cara Delevingne, Miss Fame and more. In the video, directed by The Blaze, (cousins Guillaume Alric and Jonathan Alric) the actor has a solo dance session in front of 200 people.

Dior Master Perfumer Francois Demachy, who was instrumental in making the eau de toilette, was also present for the unveiling of the commercial at dinner. "The Robert Pattinson video was finished and I used it quite a long time for inspiration before I finished the scent," Demachy said.

Beyond that, Pattinson is coming off of three films in 2019, including The Lighthouse—which just secured a Best Cinematography Oscar nomination. He's currently at work on two more for 2020, including Tenet and The Devil All the Time. He’ll star in the hotly anticipated Batman alongside Zoë Kravitz and Colin Farrell this year.

Here, Pattinson shares some of his favorite scent memories, the podcasts that give nightmares and more.

Can you remember the first fragrance you ever wore?

I was thinking about this earlier. I think it was Joe Bloggs. I think my dad had it. Do you know the kind you get at a gas station and it just says "cologne"? I think it was that, or maybe Old Spice. I used to pretend to shave when I was a kid before I needed to shave and I put it on all the cream and everything and then did the whole process.

What is your earliest memory of fragrance beyond that?

I used to put it on when I'd be on holiday with my sisters. They'd be teenagers getting ready and I'd put on some kind of after shave and then grease my hair back with Vaseline and put it into a little rattail ponytail at the back and put on cycling shorts and everyone had to call me Johnny.

What was the best part of working on the Leonard Cohen tribute video for the new Dior Homme commercial?

I would never choose to play a part similar to the parts in these ads in a movie. Because I don't think I'd be able to pull it off in a feature-length amount of time. But knowing that you can be a cool guy for, like, 45 seconds, it's quite satisfying. I guess dancing in front of, like, 200 people by yourself too—that's definitely not in my comfort zone whatsoever.
