The film, which stars Mark Rylance, Robert Pattinson, Johnny Depp, Harry Melling, David Dencik, Greta Scacchi, Sam Reid, Bill Milner, David Moorst, Gana Bayarsaikhan, Joseph Long and Clem So, was directed by Ciro Guerra (Embrace of the Serpent, Birds of Passage) from a screenplay by J.M. Coetzee. Based on Coetzee’s novel of the same name, the film follows “a Magistrate (Rylance) of an isolated frontier settlement on the border of an unnamed empire who looks forward to an easy retirement until the arrival of Colonel Joll (Depp), whose task it is to report on the activities of the ‘barbarians’ and on the security situation on the border. Joll conducts a series of ruthless interrogations, which leads the Magistrate to question his loyalty to the empire.” “Waiting for the Barbarians” will be available on VOD and digital on August 7th, 2020.
